Maggie Thomas Topping

Maggie Thomas Topping has worked with images of the land for over 30 years, distilling the rhythms and pulse of an area from its plants, landmasses and water. Her work is a painterly and personal dialogue with the basic elements of the landscape; dirt, water and rock.

Her move to Southern California brought the introduction of birds and animals into nature’s cycle of growth, decay and rebirth.
Her images go through their own cycle of birth, growth decay and rebirth on the canvas. Forms on the canvas are changed, scraped and rearranged until the artists feels that she has caught the feeling she had in the presence of the natural phenomena.

Thomas’ work belongs to the tradition of American Nature Mysticism a tradition that claims Albert Pinkham Ryder, Georgia O’Keefe and Arthur Dove as its most prominent exemplars. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and throughout California.
