Vilas Tonape

Painting to me is music for the eyes. Each of my works is a non-lyrical song. There are no words, no conscious articulations, no sentiments or statements. They are melodies rooted in visual rhythms, orchestrated by unseen and unspoken movement.

My paintings reflect my response to nature; they are conceived by the abstract, intangible sensing of nature that erupts into spontaneous imagery.

The experience reflected in my current body of new works is a less than conscious, but critical, absorption of images, shapes, colors that strike my visual sensibility through window blinds that block sunlight and yet don't. It is a world of horizontal strips, populated by light and revealing perspectives. Strips of universe, referenced by darkness and void. Strips of life, making sense despite their fragmentation, and because of it. The images spring from the source of light, source of my work.
